    Of course, in Kiev I made room for taking Aeroplane’s photos.
    \nI visited three Airports, almost always with the company of my friend\u00a0Oleg<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

    One of those was\u00a0Chaika<\/strong><\/strong>, about 15 kilometres west of the city. There we sat in a tribune of sorts, started watching what was there, and taking photos.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7272.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    While at that, a\u00a0babushka<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0came out asking if we had permission to take photos.<\/p>\n

    There was a delicious\u00a0Yakovlev Yak-52<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0doing touch-and-goes, it was the only thing we saw actually flying. But it was more than enough for me.<\/p>\n

    It’s a primary training and acrobatic Aeroplane of the Soviet Union times.<\/p>\n

    It’s very appreciated because it’s very capable in its acrobatic role, and at the same time it’s relatively easy to takeoff and land.<\/p>\n

    When I was getting my Pilot’s licence in the United States there was one in my base Airport, still with Russian registration. It was beautiful.<\/p>\n

    There is an international competition called\u00a0World Aerobatic Yak 52 Competition<\/strong><\/em>, in which only this kind of Aeroplane is used.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7255.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    On our way to Boryspil with very delicious and adequate speed limits.<\/p>\n

    Aeroplanes of Aerosvit (no longer operates), Dniproavia (no longer operates), Windrose, Ukraine International Airlines, and some foreigners like Turkish Airlines.<\/p>\n

    Nonetheless, in the recent years it’s grown strong again and has expanded quite a lot, especially with the help of Wizz Air. Many bizjets visit Zhulyany as well.<\/p>\n

    I was there taking photos with my friend\u00a0Oleg<\/strong><\/em>, and another friend that joined us. We took the photos close to the runway, close to a kind of mound.<\/p>\n

    It was raining quite a lot, and the mound became slippery. I think the three of us fell, I laughed a lot about that.<\/p>\n

    In the photo above take a look at the trousers of my friend to the right… All messy.<\/p>\n

    I saw VERY interesting things there.<\/p>\n

    On top of the usual\u00a0Wizz Air\u00a0Airbus A320<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0traffic and UTair Ukraine\u00a0ATR<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0(nowadays Azur Air), I saw traffic of Air Onix (does not exist now), a Hungarian registered\u00a0Antonov An-26<\/strong><\/strong>, and some\u00a0Yakovlev Yak-40s<\/strong><\/strong>, one from Motor Sich, and another from Constanta.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7740.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    The Constanta\u00a0Yakovlev Yak-40<\/strong>, registered as\u00a0UR-MMK<\/strong><\/strong>, was destroyed in Donetsk in a battle<\/a> that took place in the Airport in 2014.<\/p>\n

    All while it was raining. We talked about many things, and I was drinking an\u00a0Obolon<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0local beer they gave to me.<\/p>\n

    UTair Ukraine ATR 42<\/strong><\/strong>. UTair is one Russia’s most important airlines, and that was the Ukrainian branch.     A Hungarian\u00a0Antonov An-26<\/strong><\/strong>. In Zhulyany there’s a maintenance workshop for these kinds of Aeroplanes.<\/p>\n

    Last, but not least delicious, I was in the Ukraine State Aviation Museum<\/strong><\/strong>. It’s located right to the other side of the runway in Zhulyany with respect to the rainy mound.<\/p>\n\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7046.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    It’s museum that could be on par with\u00a0Monino<\/strong><\/strong>, in Russia. In both quality and interesting samples.<\/p>\n

    But accessing it is simpler due to its location within the city. There are Aeroplanes such as the\u00a0Tupolev Tu-142MZ<\/strong><\/strong>, Ilyushin Il-86<\/strong><\/strong>, Ilyushin Il-62<\/strong><\/strong>, Tupolev Tu-104<\/strong><\/strong>, and other very interesting ones.<\/p>\n

    Besides, I saw just married couples (or about to get married) taking photos of themselves.     There in the museum’s entrance a little puppy came close to me, and we were friends for a while.     There are problems with street animals in Ukraine and countries of East Europe, like in Colombia. That breaks my heart hardcore.<\/p>\n

    They didn’t look as bad as the ones you would see in a small town of the Colombian coast… I want to believe they lived mildly well, but I can’t tell for a fact.     There were a couple of interesting parallels in the museum for me. First, there were many Aeroplanes that had seen better days.<\/p>\n

    They were in exhibit as samples of a time long gone… But I had flown in the very exact type of Aeroplane that was in exhibit just a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n

    For instance, that happened with the\u00a0Antonov An-24<\/strong><\/strong>, with the\u00a0Ilyushin Il-18<\/strong><\/strong>, with the\u00a0Ilyushin Il-62,\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>and with the\u00a0Tupolev Tu-134<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7098.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    An\u00a0An-24<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0in exhibit as the oldest thing, while I had flown in an exact Aeroplane just some weeks earlier.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7055.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    The same thing with this\u00a0Ilyushin Il-18<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    The other parallel was that some models of Aeroplanes were in exhibit, like antique things of millennia gone by.<\/p>\n

    But at the same moment, right in the other side of the fence, Aeroplanes of that very exact model were taking off, or landing in Zhulyany, just like that.<\/p>\n

    It happened with the\u00a0Antonov An-26<\/strong><\/strong>, and with the\u00a0Yakovlev Yak-40<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6893.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    A museum Yakovlev Yak-40<\/strong><\/strong>. But at the same time there were some others operating right in the runway, close by.<\/p>\n

    It made me think a while in the Aeronautic transition age I was living at that moment, and how fortunate I was for being able to witness it.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6827.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    Antonov An-181<\/strong><\/strong>. This was a model for aerodynamic tests, look at that peculiar configuration.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6868.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    Sukhoi Su-25<\/strong><\/strong>, Peru has some of these.<\/p>\n

    It’s always been curious to me how the Peruvians do not have (or have not had) any issue buying Russian military Aeroplanes, without having been aligned with them politically.<\/p>\n\n[aesop_image img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Su-25Peru.jpg” panorama=”off” imgwidth=”100%” credit=”Perumetal.” alt=”Sukhoi Su-25 Peru” align=”center” lightbox=”off” caption=”Peruvian Air Force Sukhoi Su-25.     In the rest of the region’s countries (except Venezuela), that is\u00a0anathema<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

    Even though in Colombia the army operates a bunch of Russian helicopters, and apparently they’ve worked just fine for them.\u00a0Operaci\u00f3n Jaque’s<\/strong><\/em> Helicopter is Russian, for instance.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6927.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    Antonov An-71<\/strong><\/strong>. A Soviet AWACS based on the An-72, but with a highly modified fuselage.<\/p>\n

    Didn’t make it past the experimental stage, and only three prototypes were made, including the one in the photo.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6830.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    The first\u00a0Tupolev Tu-104<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0produced in series.     Mil Mi-26<\/strong><\/strong>. It’s the most powerful and biggest series produced Helicopter.     The biggest that wasn’t produced in series, but flew successfully, was the\u00a0Mi-12. <\/strong><\/strong>It’s in exhibit in Monino, Russia.<\/p>\n

    In the museum I had the chance to see with more available time, and more detail, three of my loves.<\/p>\n

    The first, the\u00a0Tupolev Tu-154<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n[aesop_image img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7214.jpg” panorama=”off” imgwidth=”100%” credit=”Ram\u00edrez.” alt=”Tupolev Tu-154.” align=”center” lightbox=”off” caption=”Tupolev Tu-154.” captionposition=”center” revealfx=”inplace” overlay_revealfx=”off” text_float=”off”]\n

    We could say it’s the soviet analogue of the\u00a0Boeing 727<\/strong><\/strong>.     There is something very curious with the\u00a0Il-62<\/strong><\/strong>. This type of Aeroplanes are steered on ground with a special tiller to the side of the cockpit, generally.<\/p>\n

    But in this particular Aeroplane, on the ground it’s steered with a\u00a0“sub-yoke”<\/strong><\/em> located right in the main yoke.<\/p>\n

    That makes it appear as if the Pilot is steering the Aeroplane on the ground as if driving a car.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7077.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    The one above is the First Officer’s yoke.<\/p>\n

    And the third of my loves present there (truly they all were, but ones more than the others) was the\u00a0Tupolev Tu-142MZ<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6921-1.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    It’s a military Aeroplane, a modification of my beloved Tupolev Tu-95<\/strong><\/strong> for anti-submarine warfare roles, with differences in equipment, undercarriage, and some measurements.<\/p>\n

    The Tu-95 is a turboprop bomber with counter-rotating propellers that went into service in 1956 and is still active (and it’s foreseen it will continue for some more years).<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6919.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    It has eight blades per engine, and it’s very noisy. Four of them move clockwise, and the other four counter-clockwise (hence the name “counter-rotating”<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6918.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    It’s routinely intercepted by NATO or USAF Aeroplanes when it flies close to those airspaces.     In longevity, United States has the\u00a0B-52 Stratofortress<\/strong><\/strong>, but Russia has the\u00a0Tu-95<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6924.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    Besides the museum ones, there are some\u00a0Yakovlev Yak-40s<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0stored there.     Ilyushin Il-86<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    At the moment of my visit, they told me some of those\u00a0Yak-40<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0were almost airworthy, on sale, and that they required little investment to be brought up to speed.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_6890.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    Obviously, that is\u00a0“little investment”<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in Aviation terms, that’s… Millions of pounds putting it lightly.<\/p>\n

    As you know, to be a\u00a0millionaire<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in Aviation, you have to get in the business already being a\u00a0billionaire<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n[aesop_parallax img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/DSC_7217.jpg” parallaxbg=”off” captionposition=”bottom-left” lightbox=”off” floater=”off” floaterposition=”left” floaterdirection=”none” overlay_revealfx=”off”]\n

    I don’t know for a fact if it was true they were on sale or almost airworthy.     As a closing comment on this section, there in Kiev is\u00a0Gostomel<\/strong><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    It’s\u00a0Antonov’s <\/strong><\/strong>base, and where the\u00a0Antonov An-225 Mriya<\/strong><\/strong>, the world’s biggest Aeroplane, usually lies when it’s not operating, or when it’s having maintenance work performed. It also spends a lot of time in Leipzig, Germany.<\/p>\n

    To my chagrin, the Aeroplane was out of sight these days.<\/p>\n

    I don’t remember whether they had it in storage, or they had it flying somewhere else in the world. So I didn’t get to visit Gostomel, nor see the\u00a0Mriya\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>(“Mriya”<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0means\u00a0“Dream”<\/strong><\/em>).<\/p>\n

    Some months ago the Aeroplane was working between Bolivia and Chile<\/a>. If I had had the money, I would have gone there just to see it.<\/p>\n

    But anyway, it’s a pending homework, and another one of the reasons why I want to return to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

    Among others, like for instance, going to the Chernobyl museum in Kiev (I went to Chernobyl itself, but not its museum), find out more about\u00a0Holodomor<\/strong><\/em>, and anyway, many a thing.<\/p>\n\n\n[aesop_image img=”https:\/\/www.alpharamirez.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/An-225.jpg” panorama=”off” imgwidth=”100%” credit=”Helmuts Rudz\u012btis.” alt=”Antonov An-225.” align=”center” lightbox=”off” caption=”Antonov An-225 ‘Mriya’.     I would also like to see how’re things there now with everything that’s happened with Russia.<\/p>\n

    Things must have changed a lot compared to 2012.<\/p>\n

    I asked a friend if he preferred things as they were in that moment (year 2012), or with the Soviet Union. He told me:<\/p>\n

    –“There are some good things now, but the industry is destroyed. I don’t know what to think, truly”<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

    Around here it’s taken for granted that most people hate the Soviet Union. But when you talk with people that lived there in the time, opinions are not so black and white.<\/p>\n

    Yes, sure, there are also people that lived there, and hate it. But it’s not such a widespread truth.<\/p>\n

    In the end, they lost the Cold War, and history is usually written by the winner. But beneath that surface there are always more complex realities.<\/p>\n

    So having shown you part of my Aviation adventures in my stroll around Kiev, let’s go to the third part<\/a> of this article. A little mishmash about nuclear reactors, and the Chernobyl disaster.<\/p>\n
